Some lovely guest posts for March

With March comes the second month of Spring. The days are getting longer and the nights a little shorter. I welcome this in absolute abundance. It's no secret that if I ruled the world or, if at the very least I was president of Ireland, I would make it law that no-one should have to get out of bed if its dark, except in cases where you're going to the airport to catch a flight and go on holiday. In that case no-one minds getting out of bed early and that can be the mini loop-hole of my law.

March also brings with it, the much celebrated St Patrick's Day. On the 17th day we will all claim in some shape or form that we are 100% or 1% Irish, get our green on and generally drink and be merry and drown a shamrock or ten. With that in mind I have decided to use March as a month to showcase some new and not so new (but always talented) Irish bloggers who are makers and shakers and people who interest, inspire and excite little ole me. I put a call out via t'internet and got a wonderful response from a variety of writers, makers and creatives and I am excit-ra and deli-ra to share them with you all. Share the blogging love and check out their posts past and present and make their day by becoming a follower. It's like giving a blog hug! Aww, who doesn't love a blog hug!

Without further a do, I'll like to introduce our very first creative. The rather talented (and oohhhh isn't her photography breathtakingly pretty!?) Gillian from Resin Road.

Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself!
Hi! I'm Gillian and I'm a jewellery designer and photographer from Dublin. My background is actually in art history and archaeology, however with the downturn in the economy, work became more and more scarce so I had to admit defeat and try and figure out a new direction to follow.

I've always had a passion for art and photography and it seemed only natural to go down that route. While working as a contractor I began to seriously think about how I wanted to make all my artistic ideas into a worthwhile reality. After work, I would spend my evenings filling notebooks with ideas and doodles and researching online until I finally came up with Resin Road. I wanted to create affordable well made jewellery that was completely unique. Initially, the colourful Georgian doors of Dublin gave me a spark of creativity, as I would pass them on my way to work everyday. I illustrated mini doors and made them into pendants, each one with a little tale to tell.

I like to do creative writing in my spare time, so I decided to add that into the pot too! It felt like it all finally came together after months of research and It was so satisfying to be able to combine so many of my interests all at once- art, photography, writing and crafts. The next step was opening my Etsy shop back in October 2012.

What do you make, how do you make it and what materials do you use?
I make miniature illustrated pendants of Dublin's Georgian doors, with a modern and unique touch. I also press and dry my own leaves and flowers and make botanical jewellery. I work with resin, which offers a 'glass-like' finish and a durable quality to the pieces, while remaining very lightweight. Once the objects inside have been properly sealed, the resin will preserve the botanicals and the illustrations for many many years.

Tell us about your creative process.
The doors require more 'planning' than the botanicals. I usually refer to my own photos I've taken of the cities doors and then sketch them up and select colours and personalities to match. I try not to over-think the whole process too much as spontaneous expression often leads to a better outcome.

With the pressed leaves and flowers the whole process is very organic and free. I would choose a flower or leaf at random and choose a suitable mold based around the objects natural form. The resin part is the only stage where being meticulous and controlled is of utmost importance. It is essential to be prepared while working with resin. I lay out everything I will need on my desk beforehand and cover everything with plastic sheeting.

Next stage is gloves and goggles on, respirator firmly attached and measuring and pouring begins. Safety is imperative while working with resin. I'd always recommend investing in a good respirator. You only have one pair of lungs and you have to look after them!

Resin is a very unstable and tricky medium to use. It took a lot of experimentation (ie. many disasters!) to get my formula and technique right, but I persisted and got there in the end. You always learn best from your mistakes.

Finally, it's a case of trying to remain patient for the resin to cure. After a day the pieces are de-molded (my fave part!) and sanding begins (the worst part!) and then the dull edges need to be re-coated. The next day findings are attached and voila! I've found you need to enjoy the whole process from beginning to end, otherwise it can be quite an ordeal as it's very involved.

Tell us about your creative space.
My 'mini' studio is also a moving one (I'm sure there's not many of those around!). During the colder months my desk and materials are set up in the dining room and in the warmer months, I move everything out into the conservatory as the view of the garden is a lot nicer, plus there's lots of natural light. Resin is very sensitive to temperature, so my studio has to move around for that reason. In the future I would love to have a 'fixed' studio overlooking the sea, but for now that's just a dream :)

My crazy kitty, Billie will often plonk herself next to me when I'm working on sketches or cataloguing materials and we have plenty of one sided conversations. She occasionally gives a little squeak of agreement. She's my little helper, but more often than not, she's just a ninny and has to be put out!

Do you create full time or part time?
At the moment I'm working full time on creating my own little business with Resin Road. I'm hoping the long hours will hopefully make my business a successful one and become my full time career.

Who and what inspires you?
My surroundings inspire me a lot. I love to be outdoors. I go walking everyday to my local park and I'm forever scanning around me for interesting objects for future projects.
Fellow Etsy artists also really inspire me and it's great to get such positive feedback and advice from people. My twin sister is also a great inspiration. She's a very talented graphic designer and we always share ideas and advice about both of our projects, which is always a huge help!

How do you stay motivated?
It can sometimes be difficult to stay motivated when sales are slow some months. However, these things happen and you have to carry on and keep working hard as it will always pay off in the end. I'll just switch on my music and bury myself in my work and all my worries disappear. Doing something that you love everyday is all the motivation you need.

How does art enhance your life?
Being creative is an integral part of me. It's that simple. I've always been artistic and it's my greatest passion in life. I don't feel like myself if I can't create and it's something I must do each day. It's my release and my focus in life.

Best piece of crafty / life advice you ever received
Just keep going! Happiness in what you do will reflect in you.

The fun stuff – five words to describe you
Oh that's difficult! I guess I'll go with;
Creative, Funny, Caring, Daydreamer, Content

Favourite places, food and song
My favourite place has to be Brittas Bay- I love being by the sea and staring out into the beyond. My favourite food..ooh there's too much to choose from! Ehm, Banoffee pie, minus the banana, so just caramel and biscuit pie-yum! Music, Hmm only one?! Well, I'll go for Lateralus by Tool

Blog / Etsy / Facebook

Thanks so much Gillian! I'll think you agree, a very talented artist with an eye for detail! Now, hop foot it to the links above and get blog hugging! :)

Positive Quotes and Dream Jobs

Today lets talk about dream jobs and all those positive quotes out there telling us to 'Go get it', 'Follow your dreams' and 'Be happy'. I want to question and discuss whether this really is possible. Can you up sticks, quit the routine and monthly wage of a job, be adventurous and take up your idea of a dream job? Can you literally half or quarter your income and happily support yourself, still pay the bills and have enough at the end of the month for the odd treat?

Many of us would say yes it is, but the reality behind implementing 'insert dream here' that underlies these positive quotes is that it takes careful planning, hard work and alot of focus and in the case of moi, a whole lot of focus. Especially financial focus, so lets talk about that old chestnut.

As someone with a short attention span and a fickle temperament, I am constantly changing my mind and what it is I actually want. One minute I want to stay put, save a shed load of money and the next I'm checking out the rental costs of living in some far reached destination and if said country are looking for any stationary addicts like myself, then I'm sending an email with a lovely CV their way and popping it into their inbox complete with a smiley face. (ok, ok, no smiley face, I'm faaaar more professional than that!)

At the grand ole age of 30, my savings are few and far between and I'm currently focusing on throwing, literally throwing money at my bank so that I can pay off that swanky MA I recently completed. The good news is that by the end of the year, I'll be debt free and then all that money I was throwing at the bank can then be thrown into a savings account....or under my mattress. I'm also being a grown up and putting away a good proportion of money each month and have set a target of money to be saved at the end of the year. The money literally comes out of my account the day I'm paid, so I can't get my spending paws anywhere near to it. This, is good for me.

Taking all the above into account, it does leave me wondering where I squander the rest of my pennies and as a result, I've taken matters into my own hands. I've started to divvy up my monthly wage. x goes here, x goes there and x goes on those fabulous craft supplies I saw on Etsy last month. (I wish!). Sitting down and working out the debits and credits can really empower you, you're in charge of your moo-la and you decide how, where and when it should be spent. Its important stuff peeps and I encourage you to tot up those pretty coffees you have each month, keep track of all those tunes downloaded from itunes and perhaps look at ways in which you can save more or even make more!

By learning to look after your finances better, sticking a few quid in a cookie jar somewhere each month (aka the bank!), you'll be more than ready when that dream job comes a'calling or even better, when you feel ready yourself to take the plunge and create your own dream job. The funds will be there to help you move house, pay a hefty deposit, perhaps hire some movers and of course throw the most fabulous of house warming parties!

While the saying 'saving for a rainy day' can sound boring and not in the least bit exciting, perhaps think of it in your own terms such as 'saving for a new adventure', 'saving for that dream holiday' or in my terms 'saving so that I can go get um tiger, move country and take over the world pa!'. Yes...yes that is the real title behind my ickle dream.

Go make yours and get your saving butt on! :)

Etsy Friday Favourites

In my real world job, today is payday! So after a long and nearly over dreary, grey January, I feel like treating myself to a few beautiful things, just 'cas I can! All of these pretty things have my heart a flutter at the moment.

We got our little bungalow painted at Christmas and now I want to fill it with all things turquoise inspired. I think it may just be the perfect colour.

But how about this beautiful and simply painted piece..how about it indeed? It would be stunning in a kitchen or a nicely lit hallway.

Would it be very wrong of me to purchase this, strip it down and repaint it some cool colour, say turquoise or green...or yellow...or all of those colours? I keep looking at all the furniture in my house (none of which I personally own by the way!) and thinking up ways, I could 'improve' it.

All of the above and more from GaloreGalore. Theres a nook or cranny somewhere in my house that can give all of the above a loving home.
Ladies and gents, how freaking amazing is this, and guess what? It apparently works too. It costs a small fortune, but I think shes a beauty and if I had the bucks, I'd seriously consider buying it.

And finally, this stunning case. I think I remember these or something similar being in my grandparents house. If only I knew where they were now!

Have a wonderful weekend!

The return of the Etsy shop!

Hurragh, its been forever, but I've finally, finally reopened my LuckyRainbowDesigns Etsy shop. Queue small round of applause and I think I can hear a few 'Whoop, Whoop's' in the background.

Due to working full time and completing my Masters in Art college, I had no choice but to put the shop on the back burner and you know what, I really missed making my little crafty items and the mini thrill of getting that sale and then spending the time to wrap it up carefully, package it and then send it off to that lovely person. I missed the whole process, especially the packaging part!

As mentioned in previous posts, I've listed some Valentines cards to get the shop kick started as love is literally in the air and just around the corner. I plan on listing more items everyday this week and in no time, I'll have a happy and full shop once more.

I'm currently working on some new type of stock, but more on a that later. It's all a little hush, hush for now, but I'm excited about it and hope you all will be too.

So, what are you waiting for? Stop on by, share the love and say hello!

A digital de-clutter!

Seriously, how bad is this image? Taken way back in 2009?

Ahhh the Christmas tree has been taken down, packed away and stuffed into the attic for another year and now, all of a sudden there's so much space in the house. It kinda feels bare but I also feel like there is less clutter and more breathing space and just like that scene from Step-brother where they make bunk beds...."there's so much more space for activities, like aerobics or a step class!" (I freaking love that scene!)

Another type of clutter though, is digital clutter! You know, you have multiple email accounts for this, that and the other and not a single folder to file them into. Your laptop is full to the brim of cool photos of you and your friends pulling faces and recreating dance moves from the 90's (No? Just me then?) and when your boss asks you for that email with that quote for that important thingy-ma-jiggy, you.just.can't.find.it. Sound familiar?

Part of getting organised, being organised and staying organised for 2013 is organising my ever expanding digital clutter. (Jees, how many times can one say organised!) I sat down and realized the following:
  • I have five email accounts (including my full time work email), actually make that six if you include Etsy
  • I run four twitter accounts
  • I run four Facebook Pages
  • I have Instagram, Pinterest, hello cotton accounts and also this blog for LuckyRainbowDesigns
  • My laptop (which is only a year old) is starting to slow down
  • I've also gotten particularly lazy at storing everything on my laptop - it's normally on the desktop (shock, horror.....I can feel you judging me!)
  • and....all of the above needs to be organised..methodically and right now.
Today I started with my busiest Facebook page, the LuckyRainbowDesigns page. The task at hand was to reorganise all the uploaded images from 2009 onwards. I had been putting this off for months and months but once I stopped procrastinating and actually got down to it, sure I was grand!

How did I do it?
Simple...I created a blank album for each year and labelled them LuckyRainbowDesigns 2009, 2010, 2011 etc and attacked one album at a time. Going through each album, checking to see what was worth saving and then right clicking and saving each image to each folder. When done with that album, I just deleted it, knowing that I would be uploading it again later but in one combined album.

The good?
It was oh so interesting to look back on the type of things I was making back in 2009. I was a little embarrassed by it all actually. The very wonky photography, shoddy craftsmanship and my very poor attempt to set up an interesting photograph. Its amazing to see how much I've learned from the whole process so far.

The bad?
Ohhh I probably annoyed a few people by clogging up their Facebook feed but in my defence I did give them a little warning before hand. I'm nice like that.

Time spent?
About two hours that I probably would have spent slouched in front of the TV anyways

Next task?
My dreaded personal gmail account, this account I'm not looking forward to. It's anything if not chaotic.

So, get off yer backsides and go organise something..anything now! I guarantee you'll feel all lovely and smug with yourself afterwards and perhaps a little less lighter.
